On a trip to South Dakota many years ago to shoot photos for reference, I fell in love with the wide open prairie and the light show at night. Artists in attendance slept in their RVs, cars and tipis out on the site of the photo shoot along he Cheyenne River. The sky was solid with stars and a shooting star was always a special sight. The lights of the fires within the tipis glowed against the dark horizon and created a secure feeling while the nearby coyotes howled. The harmonicas sang in one direction and the drums beat in another direction as I laid there trying to find the animal constellations in the stars. The Native Americans for hundreds of years had no concept of the science of astronomy, but had a wonderful belief of the many lights in the sky—they were the spirits of their ancestors.
