Our fascination with texture and the need to innovate has led us to creating unique mixed media sculptures. Our most recent body of work gives new life to thousands of pounds of previously discarded scraps, specifically, the remnants trimmed from the brims of felt hats. We have developed a process of cutting, bending and layering the intricate felt pieces over carved wood, creating richly organic shapes that are impossible to resist. 

Research suggests that touch is truly fundamental to human communication, bonding, and health. Humans require touch to thrive. A wave of studies have documented some incredible physical and mental benefits that come from touch. But in a tech-saturated world, non-sexual human touch is in danger of becoming rare, if not obsolete. Despite the benefits of digital advancement, it is vital to preserve human touch in order for us to truly thrive.

Texture is an important part of our interaction with art. It is one of the seven formal artistic elements, along with line, color, shape, form, value and space. Texture can affect mood, evoke psychological associations, bring attention to a medium, or divert our focus toward materials used. Our Sculptural Felt abstract assemblages invite the viewer to reach out and touch to help the brain interpret what the eyes are seeing. Because of the soft yet firm nature of the hatmaker’s felt, it mimics petting an animal which science has proven can greatly reduce stress levels by releasing the “feel good” hormones.
